Shame on you, Apple, for designing the headphone jack to be non-standard
So you intentionally design a headphone jack that doesn't fit any other normal 1/4-inch headphone plugs... You assholes. Because of this, the iPhone only accepts your under-performing (though better than your former) earbuds.
I guess you're concerned with the notion that iPod/iPhone owners are immediately identifiable by white earbuds in their ears. Well I'm concerned too. I might as well wear earmuffs that say "MUG ME!" on each muff.
Why even bother to use the 1/4-inch form? Why not just create something freakishly proprietary like your slim-lined iPod ports/adapters? Instead, you've misled consumers into thinking that iPhone's headphone jack is just like any other headphone jack.
Instead, people are resulting to knifing $80 earbuds to make compatible with your hard crippleware: http://people.vanderbilt.edu/~j.sullivan/Etymotic/
My point is this: Quit reinventing the wheel. Eli Whitney is rolling over in his grave.

Its not designed to force you to buy apple headphones, really. Its there to protect the phone. I've broken the headphone jack on an ipod before...this basically leverages the frame of the phone to help keep any excess force from being applied to the internals via the jack.
Plus, using an adapter ($4 online), it acts as a "breakaway" for even more protection...
Its a good idea...the problem is everyone making their headphones need a full 1/4"+ of room....
